Family in boat

The spring leads to a prime season for yachting. However, there are multiple steps that you need to take before you hit the water.

If you fail to maintain your boat, you may expose the craft to unnecessary risks. These could pose yacht insurance liabilities. Your yacht insurance may even deny you a damage claim if it deems that you negligently maintained your craft.

Prepping the Boat for a New Season

You will likely have to undertake some maintenance to prepare the boat for a new season. Doing so will help you shore up the boat against any risks you might face on the water.

  • Clean the interior and exterior of the boat. By doing so, you will get rid of more than dust and dirt. You’ll also sanitize the boat and rid it of any harmful contaminants like mold, that may have developed.
  • Inspect your safety gear. Ensure that life preservers, fire suppressant systems and other safety features still work.
  • Check you navigational systems. Make sure that your compass, radar, rudder, lights and other systems don’t need repairs.
  • Inspect the boat’s hull for any signs of cracks, weakness, or structural fatigue. Long periods out of the water may raise the risk of corrosion to the hull. Dry rot and mold may affect wooden, metal or fiberglass hulls.
  • Make sure that your electrical system fully functions. Repair any broken lights and wiring in case they pose a fire risk.
  • If your yacht has a sail, inspect the sail when you take it out of storage. Insect infestations, mold, rot and other problems could corrode sails if you didn’t store them properly. Make sure that the sail’s vital components didn’t break over the course of the winter.
  • It is usually a good idea to service the yacht’s engine before you start the season. Change the oil, filters, water and other components. Check the system for corrosion or broken parts. Other Tasks to Consider Even after performing boat maintenance, take extra steps to ensure your onboard protection.
  • Keep any certifications you need to operate the boat current. Renew these if you need to. Take any safety classes required to keep your boating licensing.
  • Check on the status of your boating insurance. If you’re going to operate your boat in new waters, you may need to change you policy. If you’ve made structural adjustments to the boat, ensure the policy covers the modifications.
Preparing your boat for a new season is a great way to reduce your insurance risks. It is also a way that you can hit the water and worry less about the chances of a problem.
