The Importance of Keeping Your Boat Insurance During Off-Season
Summer is over, and you've taken your boat out of the water. In order to save a few dollars, you decide to cancel your boat insurance. After all, what could possibly happen to your prized watercraft while it's hibernating?
Don't take a gamble on nothing bad happening simply because you aren't actively cruising the waves. Some of the most common off-season claims include:
Fire, Theft, Vandalism and Flooding
Most claims are filed for one of these reasons, which can occur during anytime of year. Without coverage, boats that are damaged by fire, fallen victim to theft,
been vandalized or suffered from flooding aren't protected whatsoever.
Injuries that Occur On or Around Your Boat
Some boaters don't realize they could be responsible for injuries that take place on, or around their boat. To make matters worse, boat owners still may be held responsible even if the injured person was there illegally. Without basic liability coverage, you could be responsible for the damages incurred or the injured person's medical bills.
Although it may sound unbelievable initially, keeping your policy all year round might actually save you a few bucks.
For example, many companies are offering disappearing deductibles. These deductibles reduce your Comprehensive and Collision
deductible 25 percent for every claim-free policy period. So by remaining claim-free for only four policy periods in a row would result in a $0 deductible. Now you can see that canceling your policy could mean paying more or the entire deductible, which generally ranges from $500 to $1,000.
